Fitness on the Run’s instructors come from many walks of life: law, corporations, teaching, and government affairs. We believe each individual brings a special balance of experience and compassion to help others achieve achievable and sustainable fitness goals.
We are excited to announce two new instructors that join the ranks: Alex Jones and Dominika Cihanova.
Alex grew up in Fairfax County, Virginia, playing multiple sports in high school. He went on to play collegiate soccer at Shepherd University, WV. Playing sports non-stop all of his life, Alex had multiple injuries throughout his athletic career. This led him to pursue teaching young athletes and others the importance of proper strength training techniques and programs, and how to balance the two.
Alex earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from Shepherd University in 2011. Soon after, he worked for a physical therapy outpatient office helping patients learn proper exercises for rehabilitation and injury prevention. He began his coaching career as the strength and conditioning/assistant soccer coach at Fairfax High School. Alex is now a strength and conditioning coach for multiple teams and Men’s Soccer Coach at Shepherd University, NCAA DII program. His ultimate goal is to help and educate people learn proper exercise techniques to prevent or further injury.
Alex will be graduating with his Master’s in Exercise Science concentrated in Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention this summer.
Alex’s favorite exercise: Deadlift, Lunge with Single Arm Overhead Press

Alex’s greatest fitness challenge: Training and running 2 half marathons and a marathon in 1 year.
Alex’s biggest food challenge: Eating pizza in moderation.
Alex’s rise and shine: I go to bed no later than 9-11PM and wake up between 4-6 AM
Alex’s wellness lesson learned this year: To have some type of balance. With my busy schedule working, coaching and finishing up my Master’s program, I have learned to reserve time for myself to relax, and enjoy myself and time with family and friends.

Dominika’s love of active lifestyle started in her early childhood as both of her parents were athletes. Most of her free time was spent in the track and field stadium. In 2006 Dominika became the captain of the Slovak national team in ISF Cross Country World Championship and was also competing in 800m track events.
Dominika’s research work focused on coaching and motivation based on Atkinson’s Achievement Motivation Theory. Her thesis linked life quality and achievement motivation as a motive power for success in life and sports. On the academic side, Dominika followed her passion for sports by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Science and a Master of Education degree in Physical Education from University of Matej Bel in Slovakia. While working towards her degree, Dominika switched to long-distance running and raced in multiple international events, such as the European Half-Marathon Cup and Supermarathon.
Dominika started working as a personal trainer in 2013 and her professional knowledge and personable approach helped many clients achieve their health goals. She doesn’t believe in every new fitness trend, instead embracing training methods backed in science.
